Data link offers convoys a clear way ahead
Farnborough, UK - Military vehicles operating in a convoy could get a much clearer picture of the road ahead and the environment they’re operating in thanks to an innovative new data link being developed by BAE Systems.
In the field, a typical military convoy operation can consist of up to 20 vehicles operating from 30 to 100 metres apart. Often, the situational awareness of drivers in middle and rear vehicles can be obscured because of the vehicles in front, and water spray, dust or sand they might kick up.
To get around this situation, scientists at BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) have a video camera on the lead vehicle with a self-contained link to the others in the convoy that allow them to see what lies ahead. The simple but ingenious communications link is based on low-cost commercial technology. It offers a robust, high capacity data link that makes convoy operations safer and easier.
When it is applied in the field, the aim would be to equip each vehicle with identical equipment that has the capacity to transmit or receive. That would allow any vehicle to take the lead without the need to reconfigure equipment.
Phil Woods, Chief Technologist at the ATC said: “The system operates at a very high frequency giving the bandwidth required to relay high quality images throughout the convoy. And, because it’s a short-range link, it is self-contained, which helps enhance security.
As well as being used by convoys, other possible applications for the system include short-range communications link on a ship. The system is currently undergoing a development and testing programme.
