ARLINGTON, Virginia -- BAE Systems, Inc. employees were so moved by the destruction and suffering in Haiti that as of March they had made more than $435,000 in donations to the American Red Cross' Haiti Relief and Development Fund and the International Response Fund. The company is matching these employee contributions dollar for dollar, for a grand total of $871,658.
In addition to the cash donations, BAE Systems employees at sites across the nation have been generous with their time in local relief efforts. "We had an event scheduled to pack dehydrated meals to help the Kids Against Hunger program," said Carolynn Johnson, a senior contract attorney in Minneapolis, "and when we decided to send our meals to Haiti, our employees joined thousands of Minnesotans in a community effort to pack more than 1 million meals."
Company employees have also set up their own collection efforts for other supplies. Ralph Sais, an engineering contractor in California, has been deeply affected by the devastation. He volunteered to lead the efforts for his site to gather new and gently used items to send to Haiti. "In response to Haiti's devastating earthquake I thought we could all lend a hand in supplying the people of Haiti with much needed items," said Sais.
BAE Systems employees around the world also took part in local fundraising for the Haiti relief efforts. The company also offered material support to the American Red Cross in the form of technology and systems. For example, First Intercom, a first responders' radio system, was offered for use in the relief efforts in Haiti. The company also makes the medium tactical trucks used by U.S. Army units in the country.
