BAE Systems Donation to Aid in Rebuilding of Pearl Harbor Memorial

15 May 2006 | Ref. 110/2006

ROCKVILLE, Md. – BAE Systems has pledged $500,000 to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum and Visitor Center in Hawaii to rebuild and expand the current facility. The project will almost double the size of the 26 year old museum and refurbish the visitor center to better accommodate the site’s 1.5 million visitors each year.

“I am delighted that BAE Systems is committed to supporting the joint public-private effort to replace the aging Pearl Harbor museum and visitor center with a new, state-of-the-art facility,” said U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, honorary co-chair of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund.  “Historians, educators, and the general public will benefit from BAE Systems’ generosity, which will ensure that the lessons of December 7, 1941 – heroic sacrifice, unshakeable commitment to our democratic ideals, triumph, and reconciliation – will never be forgotten.”

“As one of America’s leading defense companies, we are committed to supporting the men and women who have served our nation,” said Mark Ronald, president and chief executive officer of BAE Systems, Inc. “We are proud to fund this important project which commemorates those who fought and died for our country in the Pacific during World War II.”

According to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund, the new museum is designed to serve as the primary repository of artifacts and information related to the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the War in the Pacific. When completed, the structure will house an expanded state-of-the-art museum, a new research and educational center with a library and teleconferencing facility, an outdoor amphitheater, movie theaters for education and visitor orientation, an expanded book shop and improved visitor space and facilities.

BAE Systems employs more than 800 people in the State of Hawaii, providing a wide range of products and services to support our troops, including systems engineering and technical support services at Pearl Harbor; design and development of hyperspectral solutions in Honolulu; Army logistics maintenance at Schofield Barracks; ordnance handling for the Pacific Fleet; and operation of the largest commercial shipyard in the state of Hawaii.
