BAE SYSTEMS EMPLOYEES REWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING INNOVATION

16 Nov 2006 | Ref. 337/2006

WASHINGTON - More than 200 employees from throughout BAE Systems were rewarded for their innovative work at a glittering ceremony in Washington last night.  The 2006 Chairman’s Awards were presented by BAE Systems’ Chairman, Dick Olver at the National Air and Space Museum Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Chairman’s Awards recognizes BAE Systems employees, colleagues and industry partners for outstanding and innovative ways in which they shape BAE Systems and contribute towards the success of the company. More than 1,000 awards were made in total, comprising 6 Gold, 54 Silver and more than 1,000 Bronze awards.  The winners were selected from more than 3,000 nominations from across the company.

Olver said, “This year’s winning entries represent the very best of BAE Systems’ innovations and every year it is increasingly hard to select the Gold awards from so many outstanding entries.  I am delighted that we have such committed and enthusiastic employees.”

The awards are made in three categories; Innovation, Transferring Best Practice and Enhancing Customer Performance.  Awards were presented last night for the following projects.

The Gold Awards for Innovation:

FAST Airborne Networking (Wayne, N.J.) - Flexible Access Secure Transfer (FAST) is a novel wireless networking protocol designed and implemented at BAE Systems for mobile ad-hoc networking in tactical operations.

Rapid Modular Approach to Autonomous UAVs (Warton, UK) - The team designed, built and tested three new Autonomous Air Vehicles, each in less than 10 months using innovative modular Systems and Airframe approach never tried before.

The Gold Awards for Enhancing Customer Performance:

Protecting Coalition Lives with CMWS (Nashua, N.H.) - Coalition aircraft were being lost to shoulder-fired, heat-seeking missiles in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Working for the U.S. Army, BAE Systems delivered 505 systems one year ahead of contract, and over a dozen coalition aircraft “saves” have been reported in-theatre – enhancing our customer’s mission effectiveness and saving over $200M in aircraft losses.

Delivery of SURGE Aircraft Maintenance (Warton, UK) - In response to a UK customer requirement to put specific Harrier aircraft into theatre, the maintenance activities for these aircraft had to be successfully completed before deployment.  The team implemented a programme which resulted in the deployment of the aircraft on time both maintaining and extending Forward Domain's operational capability in theatre.

The Gold Awards for Transferring Best Practice:

The Big Picture (Warton, UK) - According to an internal survey in 2004, less than 50% of the workforce understood the business strategy.  The business urgently needed a way of communicating it. Working with an artist, the team created a visual interpretation of the strategy that helped increase understanding of the business up to 82%.  The leadership team also believes it has had an impact on the bottom line, with 40 per cent growth in the past two to three years.

Joint UAV Mission Manager Development (San Diego and Cowes UK) – This joint U.S./UK team are carrying out cooperative research into a state-of-the-art Unmanned Air Vehicle Mission Management System and have achieved unprecedented levels of success, including initial system demonstration work with both UK and U.S. technology.
